does one need to pray this 4 rakaat as the 4 rakaat before Asr


When one wants to pray the 2 rakat Sunnah Muakkadah after Zuhr and Isha as 4 rakat in one set, does one need to pray this 4 rakaat as the 4 rakaat before Asr i.e. reading Durood Ibrahim in 1st Tashahhud and Thana when beginning to 3th rakah?

And whats better, to read them as 2 and 2 or 4 in once?


Muhtaram / Muhtaramah

In the Name of Allāh, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.

As-salāmu ‘alaykum wa-rahmatullāh wa-barakātuh.


It is narrated in a hadith:

عن أم حبيبة تقول سمعت رسول الله -صلى الله عليه وسلم- يقول من صلى اثنتى عشرة ركعة فى يوم وليلة بنى له بهن بيت فى الجنة – رواه مسلم

Umme Habiba narrates that she heard Rasulullah (Sallalahu ‘Alayhi Wasallam) saying, “Whosoever performs twelve rak’ats in the day and night a house will be built for him in Heaven. (Ibn Majha)

In another hadith it is narrated:

عن عائشة قالت قال رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم من ثابر على اثنتى عشرة ركعة فى اليوم والليلة دخل الجنة أربعا قبل الظهر وركعتين بعدها وركعتين بعد المغرب وركعتين بعد العشاء وركعتين قبل الفجر – النسائى

‘Aisha (Radiyallahu ‘Anha) narrates that Rasulullah (Sallalahu ‘Alayhi Wasallam) who ever preserves twelve rakats in the day and night, he will enter Heaven; four before Zuhr, two after it (Zhur), two after Maghrib, two after Isha, and two before Fajr. (al-Nasai)

Sunna mu’akada (emphasized) after Zhur and Isha prayers is two rak’ats.

In some narrations, performing four rak’ats after Zhur and after Isha prayers have also been recorded.

عن أم حبيبة قالت قال رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم من صلى قبل الظهر أربعا وبعدها أربعا حرمه الله على النار

رواه الترمذى، النسائى، ابن ماجه

Umme Habiba narrates that Rasulullah (Sallalahu ‘Alayhi Wasallam) said, “Whosoever performs before and after Zuhr four rak’ats, Allah will make the fire of Hell forbidden upon him.” (al-Tirmidhi, al-Nasai, Ibn Majha)

عن عائشة رضى الله عنها قال سألتها عن صلاة رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم فقالت ما صلى رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم- العشاء قط فدخل على إلا صلى أربع ركعات أو ست ركعات – رواه أبو داود

‘Aisha (Radiyallahu ‘Anha) narrates that she was asked about the salat of Rasulullah (Sallalahu ‘Alayhi Wasallam).  She replied, “Rasulullah (Sallalahu ‘Alayhi Wasallam) never performed ‘Isha and came to my house except that he would perform four rak’ats or six rak’ats. (Abu Dawud)

From these four rak’at, two are sunna mu’akada and two are mustahab.

The Ulama have a difference of opinion that if a person performs four rak’ats after Zuhr and after Isha whether the two rak’ats sunna mu’akada will also be fulfilled within the four rak’ats.  Shaykh Kamaluddin Ibn Hummam is of the opinion that the sunna salat will be fulfilled.

If a person performs four rak’ats in one prayer, then each two rak’ats will be considered a separate salat, even though he combined them into one salat.  The salat will not have the same ruling as a normal four rak’at sunna mu’akada.  Thus, he will recite salutations upon the Prophet after the first tashahhud and Thana at the beginning of the third rak’at.

It preferable to perform the four rak’ats separately into sets of two rak’ats and separate the sunna mu’akada from the nafl prayers, as there is a difference of opinion regarding the matter.

فى الدر المختار: وهل تحسب المؤكدة من المستحب ويؤدى الكل بتسليمة واحدة ؟ اختار الكمال : نعم . قال ابن عابدين:  ( قوله اختار الكمال ) نعم ذكر الكمال في فتح القدير أنه وقع اختلاف بين أهل عصره في أن الأربع المستحبة هل هي أربع مستقلة غير ركعتي الراتبة أو أربع بهما ؟ وعلى الثاني هل تؤدى معهما بتسليمة واحدة أو لا ، فقال جماعة لا واختار هو أنه إذا صلى أربعا بتسليمة أو تسليمتين وقع عن السنة والمندوب ، وحقق ذلك بما لا مزيد عليه ، وأقره في شرح المنية والبحر والنهر .
